- With more lawsuits popping up and congressional and federal probes underway, experts say Toyota may find themselves facing criminal charges related to their recent safety issues.

- The Gahanna Police officer who lost his job after being picked up for driving his motorcycle nearly 150 mph on a freeway will get his job back after a judge ruled the city did not have just cause. Officer Christopher Thomas will serve a 90 day suspension without pay before returning.

Wednesday, March 10
- Turns out that the man who took the life of one of his coworkers and injured another before taking his own life on the campus of OSU yesterday had a motive; He had just learned he was losing his job due to poor performance. Nathaniel Brown was also struggling to keep his home out of foreclosure.
Thousands of students say they learned about the incident through the university’s Buckeye Alert System which provides subscribers with phone and text alerts. Social Media sites also helped get the word out after the story broke.
- Ohio is one step closer to a statewide ban on texting while driving. A subcommittee voted to move the idea ahead, and discussions could start within days.
- Ohio Senators have unanimously passed a House bill that would allow juvenile courts to issue protection orders for minors in dating relationships. The Ohio House of Representatives is expected to follow today. The legislation would then go to Gov. Ted Strickland, who is expected to sign it.

Tuesday, March 9
- A judge set bond at $1 million for a man who faces charges in connection with a weekend fire that claimed the lives of his two sons. Wesley Coonrod was charged with two counts of child endangering because of his actions when the fire started early Sunday morning.
- Even as the City of Columbus considers a ban on texting while driving comes word that a push is on to come up with a statewide ban as well. Nationwide insurance says that phones of the future may even be designed to block texting in moving vehicles.
- A recent inspection on the bridges in Franklin County shows most holding up well, with 7 that need work. Among those in poor condition are the Dodridge bridge over the Olentangy River, the West Main Street Bridge over Alum Creek and the Central College Road bridge over Big Walnut Creek. Ohio has the 2nd largest number of bridges in the nation.

Monday, March 8
- A 15 year old can thank a neighbor’s quick action for saving his life. Marcin Trzeciak is a former lifeguard who saw the boy had fallen through an icy pond and jumped in and pulled him to safety. They are both doing fine today.
- The State Department says there are still about 2 thousand Americans still unaccounted for in Haiti following that massive earthquake. So far 104 Americans have been lost.
- Runners in yesterdays Arnold 5K run helped a local weight lifter from Granville. All the proceeds from same day registrations were donated to The Chris Harmon fund. Harmon was seriously injured lifting weights in February.
- Sandra Bullock took home the Best Actress Oscar for her work in the movie, Blind Side.

- Two officers were injured before a man who fired shots at a Pentagon Security checkpoint was stopped. Police are still working on his motive.
- A commonly used food flavoring ingredient is causing a massive recall. 56 products including soups, sauces, gravies and dips all could contain salmonella. Here is a complete list of products being recalled.
- Columbus could be the next Ohio city to ban texting while driving. City Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday to discuss a proposed amendment to the city code.
- With 2 of every five kids in Columbus testing as overweight, and 3 in 5 adults doing the same, city leaders are encouraging local restaurants to list their calorie information. But many local restaurant owners say the cost to make the changes is too great.

- ODOT says it was weather that caused a piece of concrete to fall and hit a truck passing under the bridge over I-71 at Hudson. The bridge has been deemed safe.
- Police are looking for 2 men posing as UPS workers who ransacked a Bexley home while a mother and her 3 young children were there. Everyone is okay, but a reminder not to open your door for anyone without proper identification.
- College students on more than 100 campuses nationwide plan walkouts, rallies and marches today to protest budget cuts, layoffs and tuition increases, which they say hurt the quality of education and limit access to it. Budget concerns have prompted some schools to limit the number of students they accept.

- Taking your shoes off at the airport may be a security checkpoint of the past soon. A dozen companies have designed shoe scanning machines, and the TSA says it plans to buy 100 of the devices by next year.
- Kentucky Senator Jim Bunning dropped his fight against passing a bill to extend unemployment benefits for millions of Americans allowing the Senate to pass a 10 Billion dollar measure yesterday.
- OM Seafood Co. is recalling oysters they distributed to Ohio and 9 other states. The Portland-based company says that the oyster meat and oysters in the shell, harvested from Feb. 1 through Feb. 24, may be contaminated with norovirus. The oysters were sent to restaurants and retail stores.
- The union representing about 3,000 non-teaching employees in the Columbus City Schools district voted to accept a new contract yesterday, avoiding a strike. The employees, including bus drivers, secretaries and custodians, had been working without a contract since August.

Tuesday, March 2
- A bill to extend unemployment benefits has failed on Capitol Hill seven times since Thursday, and thousands of Ohioans were cut off yesterday. Statewide, about 25,000 people no longer had unemployment benefits, and they could be stopped for about 100 thousand more if there is no passage by the end of this month.
- Potholes got you down? The City of Columbus says they are doing their part, taking advantage of warmer weather to fill about 17 hundred of them.
- Having your mail delivered just 5 days a week is closer to becoming reality. The Postmaster General will make a formal request for the change later this month in hopes of reducing The U.S. Postal Service’s massive debt.
- Toyota still has some work to do assuring Americans their cars are safe. According to a USA Today/Gallup Poll, 55 Percent think the carmaker acted too slowly to fix safety issues, and 31 percent of Americans believe it’s not safe to drive a Toyota or Lexus.

Monday, March 1
- The Clean-up and Search and Rescue continue in Chile after that massive earthquake hit Saturday. More than 700 lives have been lost. The quake sent up tsunami warnings for Hawaii, but the all clear was given after several hours of evacuation.
- Members of The Lima Company are preparing to return to combat for the first time since their 2005 deployment in Iraq where the Marine reserve unit lost 23 members. The details of their next mission are unclear at this point.
- The United States lead the medal count at the close of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver last night. While we did not have the most Gold medals overall, we ended up with 37 medals. Canada won the gold count with 14. The U.S. had 9 gold medals.

Friday, February 19
- About 200 people crowded the gate where the first of the 8 missionaries held in Haiti returned at The Boise airport. There were prayers, cheers and hymns, as well as hugs from family members that had not seen their loved ones in more than a month. 2 members of the group still face questioning for attempting to remove children from Haiti without permission.
- A man who flew a plane into the side of an IRS field office in Texas was apparently angry over tax issues. One other person lost their life in the incident and about a dozen others were injured.
- The snow covered streets and unplowed sidewalks are slowing down and even stopping mail delivery in a lot of neighborhood around Central Ohio, and some carriers who are making it out are having a tough time. 10 mail carriers have been injured in the last 10 days.

- There are still some counties dealing with snow emergencies. Level one for Champaign, Clark, Coshocton, Fayette, Fairfield, Franklin, Greene, Hocking, Licking, Madison, Morgan, Muskingum, Pickaway, and Ross counties. - Team USA broke a record yesterday, taking 6 medals in the Vancouver Olympics. That’s the biggest single day take in U.S. history.
- The 8 Missionaries arrested in Haiti after being accused of trying to take children out of the area without permission have been freed. They arrived in Miami early today. Haiti’s government says they will continue the investigation and the group says they were just there to save some of the children after the earthquake.

- Level 3: Fayette County (the city of Washington Court House remains at a level 2 snow emergency) - Level 2: Champaign, Coshocton, Crawford, Fairfield, Guernsey, Knox, Logan, Madison, Morrow, Perry, Pickaway, Scioto, Union, Washington, Vinton.
- Level 1: Athens, Clark, Delaware, Franklin, Greene, Hocking, Licking, Marion, Morgan, Muskingum, Pike, Ross.
- Airport screeners for the first time will begin roving through airports taking chemical swabs from passengers and their bags to check for anything that might be used to cause harm. The Transportation Security Administration says the changes will start in a couple weeks.
- The Top Dog coming into the Westminster Kennel Club Dog show was the top dog standing. Sadie the Terrier won Best in show last night…a prize to add to her other 100 plus best in show wins in her career.

- The hazardous roadways are the top story this morning, and several counties continue today under snow emergencies. At level 2, meaning snow covered and icy and don’t drive if you have to are: Coshocton, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Hocking, Licking, Knox, Madison, Morrow, Pickaway, Pike, Ross, Union. No counties in our listening area are under level 1.
- Just one lane of 71 SB between SR 61 and SR 3/36 is open, and police say it will likely stay that way through today after at least 50 cars and semi’s were involved in a pile up yesterday afternoon.
- How happy and content are you? About 91st out of 162 cities, at least according to The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, which rates how happy, healthy and generally well we are. Columbus took hits on things like healthy habits and emotional health. Boulder Colorado ranked first in this study.

- A Circleville and Ohio State graduate was one of the people injured at the hands of another professor in Huntsville Alabama Friday. Joseph Leahy is a father of 2 who was in critical condition this weekend.
- Olympic officials have slowed down the track for the Luge in Vancouver in hopes of keeping athletes safer after a 21 year old Georgian Luger’s accident on Friday. Officials say they will look at all sports to see if the push to be faster and stronger is putting athletes in danger.

- Madison, Pickaway and Union Counties are still under level 2 snow emergencies this morning, with Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Licking and Marion Counties under Level one snow emergency.
- The Fallout from this latest winter storm is being called the biggest disruption in air travel since 911. It was another day of cancellations and delays, and Newark, Baltimore and Philly were completely shut down for the day. Another thousand flights are expected to be cancelled today.
- Police don’t know the motive for someone taking the life of a minister and father of 4 as he shoveled his driveway. Billy Howard, a minister at The Columbus Christian Center was found in his driveway with a gunshot wound in his chest.

- Cancelled and delayed flights caused some major travel headaches yesterday thanks to this latest winter storm. If you have a flight scheduled today, please be sure to check ahead of time to be sure there is still one. The Mid-Atlantic will feel the brunt today.

- Government safety officials are recalling drop-side cribs sold at Buy Buy Baby, Kmart, Wal-Mart and other stores after the death of three infants, including an 8 month old from Newark. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says plastic hardware on Generation 2 Worldwide and ChildESIGNS cribs can break causing a dangerous situation.The cribs were made by Generation 2 Worldwide, which went out of business in 2005.

- Toyota has recalled the 2010 Prius Worldwide, which means about 437 thousand more cars need a repair, this time to fix brake problems.
- First lady Michelle Obama has made fighting childhood obesity a priority. She is pushing an initiative called Lets Move to get kids moving and eating healthier foods.
- Columbus Division of Power and Water said nearly 140 of the city's fire hydrants were frozen Monday, and crews were working to melt ice inside the hydrants, using 180 degree heated water. Once melted, the water is then flushed and drained to a level below the hydrant's thaw line, to ensure it doesn't refreeze.

- A snowstorm that dumped several inches of snow around Central Ohio left its mark over the weekend. - An explosion at a nearly finished power plant over the weekend took the lives of 5 workers and injured several more. The sound the explosion was heard 12 miles away.

Friday, February 5
- Ten members of a U.S. missionary group who said they were trying to rescue 33 child victims of Haiti's devastating earthquake were charged with child kidnapping and criminal association yesterday. The group says they were simply trying to rescue the children, but admit they did not ask Haitian officials for permission.
- Police think they have the car involved in a hit-skip accident yesterday morning that took the life of a body shop owner who was an ordained minister. 62 year old Michael Griffith was looking at his car after a fender-bender on Worthington Galena road at Worthington Woods when the incident happened.
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture is getting tough on school lunches and announced a plan to "assure the safety and quality of food" purchased for the National School Lunch Program. They are tightening requirements on companies that supply ground beef to schools, testing the beef more often and more thoroughly, and improving communications within the USDA to "identify potential food safety issues" before children get sick.

- It hasn’t been the best week for Toyota. Yesterday the Transportation secretary caused some waves when he said that owners of recalled Toyota cars should stop driving them, which he later took back, then comes word that their popular Prius had an anti-lock brake problem when the new model came out last year.
- The Columbus Blue Jackets fired head coach Ken Hitchcock yesterday. Assistant Claude Noel was named interim coach.
- The OSU Buckeyes did not end up with a 10 ten recruiting class this year, but did end up with some good players, 9 from Ohio, and 9 out of state recruits.

- An important link has been found between an infant's seratonin levels, and SIDS. Today's Journal of The American Medical Association cites a study that shows testing of SIDS babies showed low levels of the chemical, which helps regulate breathing and temperature. Important information.
- A Mom's quick thinking may have stopped a bad situation from happening at a school on Columbus' West side. A woman yelled at a man she saw grabbing the arm of a young girl, and he ran off. She then got his license plate number and called police when she saw him near Dana Elementary school the next day.
- A major British medical journal on Tuesday retracted a flawed study linking the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to autism and bowel disease. The retraction will appear in the Medical Journal Lancet.

- Haiti has agreed to let 10 Americans from a church in Idaho face a U.S. court rather than be tried there. The Haitians are holding the group that had gone in to try and rescue more than 30 children because the government there says they did not have permission to remove the children.
- Toyota apologized to its customers and said a piece of metal about the size of a postage stamp will correct the problem with the faulty gas pedal that caused millions of cars to be recalled. The repairs will take about a half hour and begin later this week.
- We already knew that being a couch potato isn’t very healthy, but a new study shows it can be bad for your heart. For every hour you sit idle a day watching tv or on-line, increases your risk of heart disease by 18 percent! The good news is that you don’t have to be exercising, but just standing to reduce the risk.

Monday, February 1
- There is word that Toyota may have come up with a fix to their gas pedal problem that has prompted the recall of so many of their cars. A news conference is expected later today.
- A plan to put a racetrack, hotels and other related businesses on the old Cooper Stadium site is moving forward, but a group of residents in the Franklinton area are concerned about noise.
- Most of the uniforms stayed clean for yesterday’s Pro Bowl. The game as held before the Super Bowl and nobody wanted to get hurt. The AFC topped the NFC 41-34.
- Third Day won their 4th Grammy last night: Best rock or Gospel Album.
